Development on the next game in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy might be further ahead than we thought. In a video discussing the series, the project leads say they are "hard at work" on the finale, right after launching Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth .

This comment was made by Remake and Rebirth director Tetsuya Nomura, who says that he and the scenario writer Kazushige Nojima are already working on the next game. Better yet, composer Nobuo Uematsu says that he'd be "honoured" to return for the finale, despite previously fearing that he doesn't have the "strength" for another game .

In the Final Fantasy 7 discussions, the key figures behind the games chat about everything from the original release, the spin-offs, and the future of the series. Inevitably, the topic of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 comes up, as the director and writer gauge Uematsu's interest in composing the next game. Turns out, he's game, prompting Nomura to reveal that work on the sequel is already underway.

Nojima and I are hard at work on it. We're off to the races already.

Nomura started work on the next game while Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was still in development. He revealed that this was the case way back in 2022 , although this was presumably in the very early stages of drafting, likely with few devs attached to the project at that point, if any.

Earlier in the video, Nomura suggests that the project has taken its toll on him. Speaking about the intense workload, he admitted that he's looking forward to it all being over, and was apprehensive about agreeing to work on it in the first place.

An open-world Final Fantasy game and Sucker Punch's samurai sandbox are two of the big influences on Rebirth.

"Years ago, during the planning phase, I knew the kind of commitment a project like this would require. Part of me didn't want to do it," says Nomura. "Once we got started, there was no throwing in the towel halfway through. You can't leave things on a cliffhanger. You're stuck now. [...] At least now, we're finally past the midway point."

He comes back to this point later in the video when the trio are discussing the future of the series: "Personally, I want to be done with this absolute marathon of projects."

We have no clue when the trilogy will come to an end, as Square Enix hasn't shared a release window with the public. However, Rebirth is a huge game that's only just launched, so we're at least a few years away from the finale. There was a four-year gap between Remake and Rebirth after all, so Nomura still has some work ahead of him before he gets to rest.
